Kyiv’s Wastewater Infrastructure Modernised with New Equipment and Reconstruction of Pumping Station No. 3 at the Bortnychi Treatment Facilities

Under the Government of Japan’s Programme for Emergency Recovery implemented through JICA, modern equipment has been provided to Kyivvodokanal and the Bortnychi wastewater treatment facilities, while reconstruction of Pumping Station No. 3 has also been completed. The support is helping strengthen the reliability and resilience of Kyiv’s water and wastewater infrastructure.

Reliable water supply and wastewater systems are essential to the functioning of a major city, particularly during wartime when critical municipal infrastructure is under increased pressure.

Through the Government of Japan’s Programme for Emergency Recovery, implemented via the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), support has been provided to strengthen Kyiv’s water and wastewater infrastructure.

One component of the programme involved the delivery of modern equipment to Kyivvodokanal and the Bortnychi wastewater treatment facilities.

The equipment provided included:

  • fine screening equipment for more effective wastewater treatment;

  • aeration equipment supporting biological treatment processes;

  • sludge pumps for transporting wastewater sludge;

  • water tanks and disinfection systems.

A further major milestone was the completion of reconstruction and commissioning of Pumping Station No. 3 at the Bortnychi wastewater treatment facilities.

The reconstruction included:

  • dismantling of outdated pumps and pipelines;

  • construction of a new foundation for the pumping station;

  • installation of a new 315 kW pumping unit to ensure reliable technical water supply;

  • integration of modern automatic control technologies, including power supply and soft-start systems;

  • commissioning works and training of personnel responsible for operating the new equipment.

The upgraded infrastructure is designed to improve operational reliability, reduce the risk of disruptions and support the stable functioning of Kyiv’s critical wastewater treatment system.

The project forms part of the broader Programme for Emergency Recovery, through which the Government of Japan and JICA are supporting the restoration and resilience of Ukraine’s municipal infrastructure.

Crown Agents Ukraine, together with Crown Agents Japan, supports the procurement and logistics components of the programme, helping ensure that Ukrainian utilities receive the equipment and technologies required for reliable operations.

The project represents a practical contribution to the long-term reliability of Kyiv’s water and wastewater systems and to the development of more resilient urban infrastructure.
